Looking for a new way to exercise outdoors while walking?
Nordic walking may be the exercise for you to try. Nordic walking provides a total-body workout which combines fitness walking with cross country skiing motions with the use of specially designed poles.
Nordic walking is also called pole walking, poling, urban poling, etc.
Nordic walking is good for people of all ages and all abilities, including those who are rehabilitating from injury or illness.
Using a proper Nordic walking technique, one can burn 20-46% more calories than walking without poles. Poles involve all muscles, especially the core muscles. Using poles also reduces stress on hips, knees and ankles and improves stability, balance and posture.
This exercise is also beneficial for seniors who may require assisted devices for mobility purposes.
The Urban Poling™ poles (www.urbanpoling.com) are specialized poles with rubber boot tips that absorb vibration and noise when walking on asphalt or concrete. The rubber booties can be removed when walking off-road. The poles are telescopic and fit in your suitcase. They have an ergonomically designed handle and are strapless. Therefore, they are less prone to causing injury to thumb or wrist in the case of falls.
Certified instructors offer classes as part of municipal recreation programs, fitness centres, etc.
